Chrissy felt guilty that the crew of guys were all leaving without letting her feed them. They’d all worked so hard on their day off. “Are you sure you guys don’t want to stay for pizza?”

“I would, but I have a private lesson in twenty.” Keaton leaned down and grabbed his toolbox.

“Brynn made pot roast.” Axel patted his stomach. “I never miss pot roast.”

“Jess just got off work and I’m meeting her at Lanterns for drinks and dinner.” Ethan smiled, the way he always smiled when he talked about Jess. “Date night.”

“Sara and the kids made a meatloaf with my name on it. Literally.” Austin turned his phone around and revealed a picture of Sara’s two kiddos, Charlotte and Trevor, and Chrissy’s littles Cassidy and Kimber standing around a meatloaf with Austin’s name written on it with red sauce.

“I don’t have a class, and I don’t think Liv cooked, and we don’t have a date planned but I miss her, so I’m leaving.” Grady leaned down and kissed Chrissy on the top of her head. “But you should see if Ford wants pizza.”

With that not-so-subtle suggestion, Grady winked and headed out to his SUV.

Chrissy watched as Keaton, her friends’ husbands, and her brother-in-law all pulled out of her driveway and left. The five men had spent the past ten hours at her house laying down the flooring that Ford had ‘left over.’

They’d all been impressed with the renovations that Ford and Chrissy had been able to do over the weekend.

As Chrissy walked through the house, she couldn’t believe what a difference the past few days had made. The kitchen looked brand new. It had new butcher block countertops that Sara’s husband Axel, a former Marine and bodyguard turned master woodworker, had made for her. With the freshly painted cabinets and pendant lights that Ford had hung, all new appliances, and new flooring, it was a brand-new space.

All of the cracks in the ceiling were patched, and Ford had installed new can lighting in the family room and hallways. The windows, which Ford had another ‘hookup’ on, were all brand new, including the accordion door that replaced the sliders that stuck all the time.

She would not be embarrassed to have Fiona’s sixteenth birthday here. She was so relieved. As much as she appreciated all of her friends offering to host the party, birthdays had always been a big deal to Chrissy. And if she hadn’t been able to pull this off and have it at her home, well, it might just have been the straw that broke the camel’s back.

And she had one person to thank for her home being presentable.

Ford.

Without him, she wouldn’t have new flooring and appliances, new tile in the bathrooms, new lighting, new windows, the beautiful glass accordion slider door and crack-free ceilings.

The last three days, Chrissy’s suspicions grew that Ford had actually ordered all the things he had ‘left over.’ Her first clue was that there was a manual taped to the bottom of the gas six-burner stove with oven.
